Inside Pumpkin Hollow
Pumpkin Hollow is a small farming village that grows one thing, and grows it strangely well. The book opens on a giant pumpkin split open in the patch and follows the village through a whole Halloween season: farmhands rolling pumpkins down to the river barge, a cottage lane lined with jack-o'-lanterns, a bell gate at the edge of town, a glass greenhouse with a vine escaping through the roof, pumpkins in jars on the pantry shelf and a pumpkin tucked into bed.
Then the pumpkins start to move. A pumpkin spider on long vine legs, a pumpkin snake swimming under the stone bridge, a pumpkin snail, a pumpkin moth pinned to the barn door, a raven hatching from a pumpkin, and a tall friendly straw-and-pumpkin giant waving over the fence. The village answers with a festival: a ring of pumpkins around the bonfire, lanterns in the trees, a pumpkin parade and a harvest market under the tent. The last pages bring the first snow to the patch.
Every one of the 50 pages is a full-page scene with bold, clean outlines and large open areas, so it colors well with crayons, markers or pencils. Most pages have a sky, a few buildings and a crowd of pumpkins, which makes it a good book for anyone from about age six up through adults who like detailed autumn scenes.
