Inside Harvest Moon Carnival
Harvest Moon Carnival is a Victorian Halloween theme park the way a kid imagines one. You come in through the iron gate under a skull, past the bone ticket booth, and the whole park opens up: a Ferris wheel with jack-o'-lantern cars, a carousel where the horses are skeletons, a little train that steams out of the mouth of a giant skull, a roller coaster shaped like a dragon's bones, and swan boats drifting along the canal under the haunted mansion.
Between the rides are the booths and corners that make a park feel real: a fortune-teller's wagon, a mask stall, a pumpkin-tossing game, a striped circus tent, a fairground organ on wheels, a coffin phone box, a graveyard mini-golf course, a water-mill, a bell tower with a raven on top and lanterns strung over every path. Visitors in costume wander through, and the last pages lead to the giant floating pumpkin on the lake.
All 50 pages are full-page scenes with bold outlines and plenty of open space for sky, water and striped canvas. The park has lots of architecture, so it is a strong book for colorists who like buildings and rides – roughly age eight and up, with adults in mind. Spooky, never gory.
